The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to hold its National Delegates Congress and Officers’ elections on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. Approximately 7,163 delegates from across the country will gather to elect new national executive officers and vote on critical constitutional amendments. This high-stakes assembly marks the final phase of the party's nationwide reorganisation following its defeat in the 2024 general elections. With 47 candidates vying for nine national executive positions, the outcome is expected to define the party’s strategic direction as it seeks to challenge the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2028.
The race for the National Chairmanship has emerged as a central focus, featuring prominent figures including former General Secretary John Boadu, former National Chairman Paul Afoko, and former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko. Mr. Afoko, running on a "3R Agenda" (Reunite, Rebuild, and Recapture), has emphasized the need for reconciliation within the party, noting that he consulted with party stalwarts including former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo, as well as the party's current flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Meanwhile, in the race for National Youth Organiser, a Global InfoAnalytics poll indicates that Fuseini Yakubu Abanga holds a significant lead with 45% support among delegates, followed by Clement O. Gyamfi at 22%.
Political analysts, including Dr. Kwasi Amakye-Boateng of KNUST, suggest that the NPP faces a formidable task in reclaiming power due to perceived economic stability under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama. Analysts argue that the party requires a "new identity" and a leadership capable of restoring its intellectual brand to attract the broader electorate. In response to recent polling, National First Vice Chairman aspirant Richard Ahiagbah dismissed survey results, asserting that the actual delegate votes will reflect a desire for regional balance and internal cohesion. The election for General Secretary also promises to be competitive, with incumbent Justin Frimpong Kodua facing three challengers.
To ensure a smooth process, the NPP Organisation Committee, chaired by Anthony Abayifaa Karbo, has collaborated with the Inspector General of Police to deploy between 3,000 and 4,000 personnel to manage security and traffic. The Electoral Commission has confirmed that all materials, including ballot papers, are ready for the voting process, which will follow a conference session to discuss amendments regarding party leadership designations and the election of Vice Chairpersons. As the party already confirmed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its 2028 flagbearer earlier this year, this congress serves as the essential final step in aligning the party’s administrative machinery for the upcoming political cycle.
