Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, an aspirant for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairmanship, has reaffirmed his confidence in securing victory in the party's upcoming national executive elections. Speaking during a campaign visit to the Okaikwei South constituency, the veteran politician expressed optimism that his vision for the party resonates with the grassroots, despite recent internal tensions and public scrutiny. He praised the rank and file for their commitment to the party's growth and highlighted the necessity of a strong leadership to steer the NDC toward future successes.
The chairmanship bid comes amid a period of controversy following comments Vanderpuye made regarding Sammy Gyamfi, described as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board. Vanderpuye had previously critiqued Gyamfi's public response to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, which led to friction within the party. Although he has since apologized and clarified that his intentions were not to undermine Gyamfi, some political analysts have suggested that the fallout could potentially influence his performance at the polls. Vanderpuye, however, dismissed these concerns, focusing instead on his message of internal reform and reconciliation.
During his tour, Vanderpuye commended NDC members for their peaceful conduct throughout the ongoing constituency-level elections. He emphasized that maintaining such decorum is vital for the party's stability as they prepare for higher-stakes electoral challenges. The aspirant underscored the importance of unity, urging all candidates to reconcile after the internal contests to ensure a formidable and undivided front. He noted that the strength of the NDC lies in its ability to move past individual disagreements toward a common goal of national leadership.
As the NDC prepares for the next phase of its internal reorganization, Vanderpuye is looking toward the regional elections scheduled for November 14 as a crucial precursor to the national congress. The final decision on the national chairmanship will be made on December 19, where delegates from across the country will choose the leadership to guide the party through the next political cycle. Vanderpuye remains steadfast in his belief that his experience and commitment to party cohesion will carry him to victory, positioning him as an ideal candidate to lead the NDC into the 2028 election cycle.
