Nigeria has successfully evacuated its only confirmed Ebola patient, a 42-year-old woman, from Abuja to Switzerland for specialized medical treatment. According to health authorities, the patient’s condition is currently stable and has shown signs of improvement. The evacuation was facilitated by the patient’s status as the spouse of a Swiss embassy worker, allowing for the international transfer to proceed shortly after her diagnosis was confirmed.
Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate reported that genetic analysis of the virus in this case has revealed a close relationship to the strain identified in Kenya’s index case. This discovery represents the first confirmed genetic connection between the outbreaks in the two nations. However, the transmission path remains a subject of intense investigation, as officials have found no evidence of direct travel or physical links between the cases in Nigeria and those in Kenya.
Prior to her arrival in Nigeria, the patient had traveled to Uganda, which remains a key point of interest for epidemiological tracking. In light of the situation, the Nigerian government has significantly ramped up its public health response. Authorities have intensified contact-tracing efforts and implemented more rigorous screening protocols at international airports to detect potential cases and prevent the further spread of the virus within the country.
