The National Identification Authority (NIA) has officially launched a new online portal that enables Ghanaians living in 11 countries to apply for Ghana Card replacements without having to travel back to Ghana. Executive Secretary Wisdom Koku Deku announced the rollout of this digital service on October 19, 2026, highlighting it as a major milestone in the authority's commitment to decentralizing and modernizing its operations. The initiative targets citizens in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and several other nations, providing them with a streamlined administrative process from their current locations.
Beyond the online portal, the NIA has also expanded its physical footprint by operationalizing four Prestige 24/7 Centres across Ghana. These centres are designed to offer around-the-clock services for those who require expedited card replacements and other identity-related tasks locally. Mr. Deku emphasized that the combination of the online application system and the prestige centres ensures that Ghanaians, regardless of their geographical location or schedule, can maintain valid identification. The executive secretary noted that the move is aimed at reducing the logistical and financial burdens often faced by the diaspora when trying to access essential government services.
Looking ahead, the NIA plans to further enhance its digital infrastructure by introducing a remote update service. This upcoming feature will allow cardholders to modify or correct their personal details through the online platform without visiting an NIA office. This development aligns with the authority’s mission to provide innovative and accessible identification solutions under its guiding slogan, ‘Providing Future Solutions Now.’ By integrating these digital advancements, the NIA seeks to ensure that the Ghana Card remains a reliable and convenient tool for all citizens, reinforcing its role in the nation's digital economy.
