The National Identification Authority (NIA) has developed a new mobile application to allow individuals and small businesses to conduct biometric verification using the Ghana Card. This initiative, announced by the Director of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, on November 2, 2026, aims to streamline identity confirmation processes across the country. The application is designed to provide a straightforward “yes or no” response to verify whether a person's identity matches the official NIA database, addressing accessibility gaps for those who cannot easily reach the authority’s primary verification platform.
The development of the mobile application aligns with the National Identity Register (Amendment) Regulations, 2026. These new rules strictly prohibit the common practices of photocopying, scanning, or using visual checks to verify a Ghana Card. By introducing a digital verification tool, the NIA seeks to end the reliance on physical copies, which often poses a risk to data security and personal privacy. This shift is intended to modernize identity management and ensure that only authorized digital methods are used for commercial and personal transactions.
During a press briefing, Mr. Darlas emphasized that the application is built to secure personal information and prevent identity fraud. The platform provides a solution for individuals and small-scale entities that have previously struggled to meet the stringent requirements of the NIA’s main verification system, which necessitates certification from the Data Protection Commission. While the main service's cost can be as low as 10 pesewas per verification depending on the institutional workflow, the mobile app offers a more flexible entry point for smaller users to remain compliant with national standards.
Inspections for compliance with the 2026 regulations are scheduled to begin on November 3, 2026. The NIA has warned that institutions failing to adhere to the new biometric verification requirements could face penalties. The authority expects the mobile application to be launched officially in the coming days, providing a vital tool for businesses to transition away from physical documentation and toward a more secure, digital-first identity ecosystem in Ghana.
