Sunyani Technical University (STU) has received a significant financial boost of US$40,000 from Newmont Ahafo North to facilitate its hosting of the upcoming Ghana Technical Universities Sports Association (GHATUSA) Games. This substantial contribution, presented as a cheque to the university administration, is specifically earmarked for the enhancement of sports infrastructure on campus. As STU prepares to host the national event next year, the funding is expected to play a critical role in bringing the university's sporting facilities up to professional standards, ensuring that the institution is well-equipped to manage the influx of athletes and spectators from across the country. The donation highlights the deepening relationship between the mining company and the technical institution as they collaborate on regional development initiatives. During the official presentation ceremony, the General Manager of Newmont Ahafo North, Mr. Charles Bissue, emphasized that the funding is rooted in a broader strategy of corporate social responsibility aimed at promoting community development and youth engagement. He noted that the investment is not merely for the duration of the games but is intended to create a lasting impact. Mr. Bissue specifically called for a culture of rigorous maintenance, urging the university leadership to ensure that the renovated and new facilities are kept in excellent condition long after the GHATUSA Games have concluded. By doing so, the university can provide a sustainable legacy of sports excellence for its students and the surrounding Sunyani community. In response, the leadership of Sunyani Technical University expressed profound gratitude for the donation, noting that such corporate interventions are vital for the growth of technical education and athletic programs in Ghana. The collaboration between Newmont and STU is seen as a model for how the extractive industry can positively impact educational institutions within their operational areas. Moving forward, both organizations have pledged to maintain a sustainable relationship that focuses on mutual growth, sports promotion, and the holistic development of the youth in the Bono Region. This investment not only prepares STU for a successful tournament but also strengthens its position as a leading hub for technical and athletic training in the region.
