Nene Aderibigbe, the mother of celebrated Nigerian singer Ayra Starr, has issued a public warning to Generation Z regarding the dangers of excessive social media use. She argued that the digital landscape is increasingly responsible for eroding the capacity for independent thinking among young people. According to Aderibigbe, the constant engagement with online platforms creates an environment where youth are more likely to mirror the opinions of others rather than developing their own unique perspectives.
The primary concern raised by Aderibigbe involves the difficulty young individuals face in identifying their personal talents while being constantly influenced by social media. She observed that many members of Generation Z have become overly dependent on their devices, which limits the mental clarity required to recognize and nurture their own strengths. By prioritizing digital trends and external validation, she warned that they risk losing sight of their individual potential and creative identities.
To mitigate these effects, Aderibigbe has urged the youth to commit to a daily practice of disconnecting from all social media platforms for at least two to three hours. She recommended that this time be spent in meditation and quiet reflection to foster original thought and internal growth. By intentionally stepping away from the digital world, she believes young people can reclaim their independence and better focus on their personal and professional development.
