Prominent members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) have officially filed their nomination forms for the party's national executive elections, which are scheduled for December 19, 2026. High-ranking officials, including National Organiser Joseph Yammin and Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande, are among those seeking to retain their positions. These internal contests are seen as a critical step in strengthening the party's leadership and organizational structures following the inauguration of President John Mahama in January 2025.
Joseph Yammin announced his bid for a second term during a press conference on October 21, confirming he had completed the necessary nomination processes and paid the required fees. He expressed confidence in his electoral strategy as he awaits the final confirmation of his challengers. Similarly, Mustapha Gbande highlighted his track record of loyalty and service while picking up forms to retain his seat as Deputy General Secretary. Gbande acknowledged past challenges and offered an apology to anyone he may have offended during his tenure, emphasizing that his experience is essential for preparing the NDC for the 2028 general elections.
The race for national executive roles has also attracted several new contenders and challengers. Dr. David K. Mensah Awadzie has entered the race for Deputy General Secretary with a campaign focused on institutional reforms and a merit-based "National Party Service Register." Other aspirants include Dr. Sammy Ayeh, who is contesting the position of Deputy National Communications Officer, and veteran journalist Adnan Adams Mohammed, who is eyeing a slot on the National Executive Committee (NEC). Nicholas Normeshie, a private legal practitioner, also filed for an NEC position, pledging to enhance grassroots mobilization to support the government's development agenda.
To ensure the integrity of the upcoming national congress, the NDC Functional Executive Committee has established two dedicated oversight bodies. General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey will chair a 21-member planning committee responsible for logistical arrangements, while a 10-member electoral committee led by Mahdi Gibril will manage the voting processes. Party leadership has called for transparency and cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure the December polls result in a unified front capable of supporting President Mahama’s administration and securing future electoral victories.
