Nations FC’s inaugural journey into African club football has come to an end following a 1-1 draw against Malian side FC Diarra at the Accra Sports Stadium. The result in the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round saw the Ghanaian side fall 2-1 on aggregate, after they failed to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg played in Bamako. This exit marks a disappointing milestone for Ghanaian football, as the country will have no representative in the group stages of the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup.
Despite entering the return fixture with high hopes, Nations FC struggled to capitalize on their territorial dominance. The MTN FA Cup winners controlled possession throughout the match but were repeatedly frustrated by a resilient Malian defense and the heroics of FC Diarra’s goalkeeper, Yakouba Diallo. The task became significantly more difficult when FC Diarra scored first, extending their aggregate lead and forcing the home side to search for at least two goals to stay in the competition.
Nations FC finally broke through in the 80th minute when Ouedraogo Fatahou found the back of the net to equalize on the day. However, despite a frantic final ten minutes and continued pressure, the second goal remained elusive. The Malian visitors held firm to secure their progression, leaving Nations FC to reflect on a continental debut where they showed technical promise but lacked the clinical finishing required to advance.
The elimination marks a somber conclusion to a complex season for Nations FC. While they earned their place on the continental stage by winning the domestic cup, the club is also navigating the fallout of being relegated from the Ghana Premier League. Moving forward, the team will shift its focus to the Division One League, where they will aim to rebuild and secure a swift return to the top flight of Ghanaian football.
