The National Film Authority (NFA) has officially launched the Cinema Train Initiative, a strategic project designed to improve cinema accessibility and create sustainable revenue streams for Ghanaian filmmakers. The launch, held at Silverbird Cinemas in Accra, introduces a digital platform aimed at revitalising the local film industry by bridging the structural gap between movie producers and their audiences.
Central to the initiative is the digital hub, cinematrain.com, which serves as a one-stop shop for film discovery. This platform allows moviegoers across the country to easily locate screenings and purchase tickets online, addressing long-standing challenges regarding limited distribution channels. By streamlining the exhibition process, the NFA seeks to eliminate barriers that have historically hindered the commercial success of domestic productions.
During the launch, NFA CEO Kafui Danku emphasized the importance of establishing reliable exhibition pathways, noting that such infrastructure is vital for the industry's financial health. NFA Board Chairman Ivan Quashigah added that the project sets an ambitious goal of engaging at least one percent of the Ghanaian population with local content. This target is viewed as a critical benchmark for building a robust and self-sustaining cinematic culture in Ghana.
The Cinema Train Initiative has garnered significant support from key stakeholders, including film distributors, cinema operators, and corporate sponsors. By fostering closer collaboration across the entire film value chain, the NFA expects to create more opportunities for Ghanaian productions to reach wider audiences. This effort is intended to strengthen the creative arts sector and ensure that filmmakers receive the financial returns necessary to fund future projects.
