In a recent interview, Ghanaian musician and actress Nana Frema highlighted the critical role of upbringing and cultural conditioning in perpetuating male dominance and the oppression of women. Frema pointed out that many men who grow up in environments where their fathers silence their mothers often replicate these behaviors in their own relationships. She stressed the importance of mothers in shaping their sons' attitudes towards women, advocating for a shift in parenting practices that encourage respect for women's voices and challenge traditional gender roles. Frema's insights call for a re-evaluation of societal norms regarding gender and parenting in Ghana, emphasizing that not all men conform to oppressive patterns, and that change is possible through conscious upbringing.
