Zonta Club of Accra II Installs New Leadership to Drive Women's Education and Gender Equality for 2026-2028 Biennium

The Zonta Club of Accra II has officially ushered in a new leadership era with the installation of its executive team for the 2026-2028 biennium. Led by newly inaugurated President Nana Eduwaa Appiah, the club has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to advancing the status of women and girls in Ghana. This transition marks a strategic pivot toward enhancing educational opportunities, advocating for gender equality, and tackling the systemic issues that hinder female empowerment across the country. The ceremony provided a platform to reflect on past successes while outlining an ambitious roadmap for the coming years.

Central to President Appiah’s vision is a robust three-pronged strategy that prioritizes academic advancement and literacy. The club plans to significantly expand its Girls Fellowship Programme, an initiative designed to provide mentorship and support for young women in their educational journeys. In addition, the new executive team intends to launch a dedicated reading club and establish a new library to foster a culture of lifelong learning and curiosity among young girls. These educational interventions are paired with a commitment to addressing gender-based violence (GBV) through strategic partnerships. By collaborating with specialized organizations, the Zonta Club aims to provide critical support services for survivors, ensuring that safety and dignity remain at the forefront of their advocacy efforts.

The installation ceremony also served as a critical forum for discussing the legislative landscape of women's rights in Ghana. Renowned women's rights advocate Dorcas Coker-Appiah emphasized the urgent need for the effective implementation of laws such as the Affirmative Action (Gender Equality) Act. She noted that while legal frameworks are a step in the right direction, persistent cultural barriers continue to limit women’s participation in leadership roles and decision-making processes. Outgoing President Merley Wood also addressed the gathering, highlighting the club’s previous contributions toward improving the welfare of women and girls and expressing confidence in the new executive's ability to scale these impacts.

As the 2026-2028 biennium begins, the Zonta Club of Accra II stands as a vital force in the Ghanaian civil society landscape, particularly within the education sector. Their focus on educational infrastructure and legislative advocacy signals a holistic approach to achieving gender parity. By bridging the gap between grassroots support—such as literacy programs and libraries—and national-level policy implementation, the club seeks to create an environment where women and girls can thrive without the constraints of discrimination or violence. The success of this new leadership will be instrumental in shaping the next chapter of female empowerment in the region.
