The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) apprehended 13 individuals during a targeted raid on an illegal mining site at Subin Akwaaboso in the Upper Denkyira West District. The operation, which focused on illegal activities taking place along the Offin River, is part of an intensified effort to curb the persistent problem of "galamsey" that has severely impacted Ghana's primary water bodies. This particular intervention underscores the government's commitment to patrolling critical ecological zones to prevent further damage to the nation's aquatic resources.
During the exercise, the task force identified and seized several Chanfang machines, which are frequently used by illegal miners to wash gold ore directly in or near rivers, leading to heavy siltation and chemical pollution. This raid marks the fourth day of an expansive, multi-regional crackdown by NAIMOS. In the days leading up to this operation, the secretariat had already conducted similar enforcement actions across the Western North and Ashanti regions, successfully disrupting multiple illegal sites and dismantling equipment used by operators.
The operation at Subin Akwaaboso was met with significant resistance from local residents, resulting in a volatile situation for the task force. Tensions escalated as community members attempted to interfere with the arrests, leading to reports of gunfire and heightened security concerns. These clashes highlight the complex socio-economic challenges enforcement agencies face when conducting raids in areas where illegal mining has become a deeply embedded, albeit destructive, local industry.
Despite the resistance encountered on the ground, NAIMOS officials have indicated that these sweeps will continue as part of a broader strategy to ensure environmental restoration. The 13 suspects are expected to be processed through the legal system as the secretariat maintains its pressure on those defying environmental regulations. The ongoing mission remains focused on the total protection of Ghana’s river systems and the elimination of unregulated mining activities that threaten the long-term ecological health of the country.
