Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang officially launched the Ghana chapter of the Women Allying Women (WAW) initiative in Accra on October 27, 2026. The event, which included a high-level leadership breakfast, brought together prominent African women leaders, policymakers, and traditional authorities to advocate for gender parity and the removal of systemic obstacles hindering women’s advancement. The initiative aims to establish a robust network of African women leaders dedicated to collaboration, mentorship, and financial inclusion across the continent.
During her address, the Vice President emphasized the urgent need to dismantle the barriers that impede women's career progression, specifically citing the unequal distribution of caregiving burdens and the lack of equal opportunities. Professor Opoku-Agyemang argued that achieving leadership equity requires a collective effort to reform structural inequalities. She called for a supportive environment where mentorship is prioritized, allowing women to navigate professional landscapes more effectively while balancing societal and domestic expectations.
Her Majesty Olori Atúwàtse III, Queen Consort of the Warri Kingdom in Nigeria, also addressed the gathering, urging African leaders to take full responsibility for the continent's development. She noted that meaningful transformation requires influential stakeholders to translate visionary ideas into concrete actions that benefit women. The Queen Consort highlighted that recognizing women’s contributions is essential for holistic national development, a sentiment echoed by other speakers who encouraged women to remain resilient in the face of historical exclusion.
The launch concluded with a call for increased mutual support among women in leadership to foster a more inclusive political and economic environment. By honoring influential female figures and promoting financial empowerment, the WAW initiative seeks to ensure that African-led solutions are inclusive of women’s perspectives. The organizers intend for the Ghana chapter to serve as a hub for future leadership training and strategic partnerships that will drive social change across West Africa.
