Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has charged the Ghana Prisons Service to maintain a firm commitment to the human rights and dignity of those in their care. Addressing a graduation parade for 609 officer cadets in the Ashanti Region, the Vice President emphasized that the transformation of the correctional system depends on treating inmates with humanity and preparing them for a life beyond the prison walls. She underscored that the primary mandate of the service must remain the successful rehabilitation of individuals rather than mere retribution.
During the ceremony, Professor Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to improve general living conditions within the nation's prisons. She announced that the administration is prioritizing the expansion of vocational and agricultural programmes. These initiatives are designed to turn correctional facilities into centers of productivity where inmates can acquire modern farming skills and other technical trades. Such efforts aim to ensure that inmates are better equipped to reintegrate into the national workforce and contribute to the economy upon their release.
The Vice President also addressed broader legal and social challenges facing the prison system. She called for the adoption of more robust case management strategies and the introduction of alternatives to custodial sentencing to help manage prison populations more effectively. Furthermore, she appealed to the public to play their part in the rehabilitation process by ending the stigmatization of former inmates, which she described as a significant barrier to successful reintegration.
As the 609 new officers join the service, the Vice President’s directives signal a clear policy shift toward a rehabilitation-first approach. By focusing on both the internal management of prisons and the external social environment, the government aims to create a more just and effective correctional system that reduces recidivism and supports the human rights of all citizens, including those behind bars.
