The Upper East Regional Police Command has confirmed the death of 20-year-old Muntari Munumi, a suspected armed robber, while in police custody. Munumi reportedly fell unconscious while leading officers to a location where his accomplices were allegedly hiding. The incident follows his apprehension in Sapeliga after a violent robbery in Bazua, which led to the recovery of a high-powered military-grade weapon.
The initial incident began when Munumi allegedly attacked two individuals returning from work in Bazua. During the robbery, he made off with a Royal motorbike, three mobile phones, and GH₵1,820 in cash. However, the victims fought back and managed to wrestle an M16 A2 assault rifle and ammunition away from the suspect. Following the struggle, the victims alerted the Googo Neighbourhood Watch Committee, who assisted in capturing the suspect in the Sapeliga area.
Following his arrest, Munumi was interrogated by the police, during which he provided the identities and possible locations of his accomplices. He subsequently agreed to lead the police to their hideout to facilitate their arrest. During the journey to the location, the suspect reportedly lost consciousness. He was immediately rushed to a local hospital for emergency medical attention but was pronounced dead upon arrival by medical staff.
The Upper East Regional Police Command is continuing its investigation into both the robbery and the specific circumstances surrounding the suspect's death. Authorities are now focused on apprehending the identified accomplices who remain at large. The police have expressed their gratitude to the victims and the members of the Googo Neighbourhood Watch Committee for their bravery and swift action in neutralizing a suspect armed with an assault rifle.
