Muntari Munumi, a 20-year-old suspected armed robber, has died in police custody in the Upper East Region shortly after being re-arrested for a violent robbery. Munumi reportedly collapsed while in transit to a police station after attempting to lead officers to the hideout of his accomplices. He was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital, and his remains have been deposited at a morgue pending an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
The incident follows a robbery at Sapeliga Junction in Kobore, where Munumi allegedly attacked two victims returning home from work. The victims were robbed of their motorbike, mobile phones, and cash totaling GH‵1,820. During the encounter, the victims struggled with the suspect and successfully managed to disarm him. The Upper East Regional Police Command confirmed that an M16 A2 assault rifle, along with live rounds and empty shells, was retrieved following the suspect's apprehension.
Following the struggle with his victims, members of the Googo Neighbourhood Watch Committee apprehended Munumi and handed him over to the police. While in custody, the suspect reportedly offered to disclose the names and locations of his accomplices. However, during the journey to identify these individuals, he fell unconscious. Despite efforts by the police to rush him for medical attention, he was confirmed dead by medical staff upon arrival at the hospital.
The Upper East Regional Police Command has commended the local community and the neighborhood watch committee for their bravery and cooperation in disarming and capturing a dangerous suspect. Investigations are ongoing as police intensify their efforts to track down and arrest the remaining members of the robbery gang. The Command has urged the public to remain vigilant and continue supporting law enforcement to curb criminal activities in the region.
