MultiChoice Ghana, in partnership with the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, has announced a significant restructuring of its DStv subscription packages to enhance affordability for Ghanaian consumers. Effective November 5, 2026, the service will consolidate its existing six packages into four newly designed tiers. This initiative, which includes an entry-level package priced at GH₵50, was revealed during a joint press briefing aimed at making legitimate pay-television content more accessible to a broader audience across the country.
The new subscription structure features the Starter Pack at GH₵50, offering 90 channels, and the Select Pack at GH₵100, which includes 123 channels. A notable highlight of the restructuring is the dedicated Sports Pack, priced at GH₵250, which provides extensive football coverage. The most comprehensive tier, the Ultimate Pack, combines premium sports and entertainment for GH₵570. Communications Minister Sam George emphasized that the new sports pricing represents a reduction of over 60%, as similar access previously cost approximately GH₵875 monthly.
This strategic shift follows extensive discussions between the government, MultiChoice, and Canal+ to address declining viewership and the prevalence of piracy. By lowering price barriers, the government and MultiChoice aim to discourage the use of illegal streaming services and "ghost boxes" that bypass legitimate subscription models. The simplification of packages is being implemented across several Sub-Saharan African markets, including Kenya and Uganda, as part of a broader effort by Canal+ and MultiChoice to provide better value and combat unauthorized content distribution.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, with Appiah Kusi Adomako, the West African Regional Director of CUTS International, describing the new packages as a major relief for consumers. He noted that the curated channel selection and reduced prices are likely to boost subscriber numbers, potentially offsetting revenue losses through increased volume. However, he cautioned that the long-term sustainability of these prices will depend on the company's ability to manage currency fluctuations and the effectiveness of national efforts to curb illegal broadcasting operations.
