MultiChoice Ghana and Canal+ have officially introduced a revised subscription structure for DStv, featuring four new packages with prices starting as low as GH₵50 per month. Announced in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications, the initiative is scheduled to take effect on November 5, 2026. The move aims to make high-quality, legal television content more accessible to Ghanaians while providing a sustainable alternative to the growing threat of piracy.
Under the new pricing regime, the service provider has streamlined its offerings from six packages down to four distinct tiers. These are priced at GH₵50, GH₵100, GH₵250, and GH₵570 per month. The GH₵50 entry-level package is designed to be highly inclusive, offering access to over 120 channels, including premium sports content that was previously restricted to higher-tier subscriptions. MultiChoice Ghana CEO, Alex Okyere, emphasized that these new rates are permanent adjustments rather than short-term promotional offers, responding directly to public concerns regarding high subscription fees.
Minister for Communications, Samuel Nartey George, highlighted the government's role in facilitating these changes to protect both consumers and the creative industry. He explained that by lowering the barrier to entry for legal content, the government and service providers hope to discourage the use of illegal streaming services and "ghost boxes." The Minister noted that high costs often drive consumers toward pirated alternatives, which ultimately harms local content creators and the broader national economy.
To complement the new pricing, the government plans to collaborate with various security and regulatory agencies to intensify efforts against TV piracy. Upcoming measures include stricter enforcement against the sale and use of illegal decoders. By aligning price points with consumer affordability, Canal+ and MultiChoice Ghana intend to secure a larger legal subscriber base, ensuring the long-term viability of the broadcasting and creative sectors in Ghana.
