Justina Nelson links women’s health to Ghana’s national development

Justina Nelson, the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), has identified investment in women’s health as a fundamental pillar for Ghana's national development. Speaking at a breast cancer awareness and screening event held in October 2026, Nelson argued that the well-being of women is not merely a medical concern but a critical economic and social indicator that determines the strength of the nation's progress. She emphasized that a nation's development trajectory is intrinsically linked to the health status of its female population, who often serve as the primary caregivers and significant contributors to the labor force. The event was organized by MIIF in collaboration with Women in Mining Ghana under the theme "Investing in Women’s Health, Investing in Stronger Communities." During her address, Nelson explained that healthy women are the backbone of thriving households and, by extension, robust communities. She noted that when women are healthy, they are better positioned to participate in the workforce and drive long-term economic growth. This perspective shifts the narrative on health expenditures, framing them as a strategic investment in human capital rather than a simple budgetary cost. Central to the discussion was the specific impact of breast cancer on the Ghanaian workforce and family structures. Nelson highlighted the necessity of early detection and regular screening as vital tools in reducing the burden of the disease. By fostering a culture of health awareness within corporate and industrial spaces—particularly in male-dominated sectors like mining—Nelson pointed out that organizations can better support their female employees. This support is essential for ensuring a sustainable and healthy talent pool that can continue to contribute to the country’s key economic sectors. The initiative reflects a broader commitment by MIIF to social responsibility and sustainable development within Ghana's minerals sector. By partnering with organizations like Women in Mining Ghana, the Fund aims to address systemic health challenges that could otherwise hinder national productivity. Nelson concluded by calling for a sustained commitment from both public and private stakeholders to prioritize women’s health initiatives. She maintained that such efforts are a necessary pathway toward achieving more resilient, equitable, and prosperous communities throughout the country.
