Ghana's energy sector reached a significant milestone with the arrival of the MT Asharami Ghana, a state-of-the-art 40,000-cubic-metre Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) carrier, at the port of Tema. The vessel, which delivered an initial 5,000 tonnes of LPG during its maiden voyage, represents a major investment by the Sahara Group in the nation's energy infrastructure. This development is expected to significantly enhance the availability of LPG for both domestic and commercial use, marking a critical step toward stabilizing the country's energy supply chain.
Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, who led a delegation of government and National Petroleum Authority (NPA) officials to welcome the vessel, underscored the strategic importance of this arrival. He noted that the investment aligns with the government’s ambitious target to increase LPG access to 50% of the population by 2030. According to Dr. Jinapor, strengthening LPG infrastructure is vital not only for ensuring energy security but also for positioning Ghana as a primary energy hub within the West African sub-region.
The arrival of the MT Asharami Ghana highlights the essential role of public-private partnerships in achieving sustainable development. Mr. Wale Ajibade, Executive Director of Sahara Group, emphasized that the vessel's arrival reflects a deep-rooted commitment to improving access to cleaner energy across the continent. Similarly, Ms. Yaa Serwaa Alifo, Managing Director of Asharami Ghana, described the moment as transformative, noting that the increased capacity will facilitate a more reliable and efficient distribution of LPG to households and businesses nationwide.
Beyond improving supply logistics, this initiative is a key component of Ghana’s broader strategy to promote clean cooking solutions. By reducing reliance on traditional fuels such as charcoal and wood, the government and its private-sector partners aim to mitigate environmental degradation and improve public health outcomes. The maiden voyage of the MT Asharami Ghana signals a renewed momentum in the country’s transition toward a more sustainable and secure energy future.
