The Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) has reported a significant surge in revenue, collecting GH₵7.82 billion in mineral royalties during the first nine months of 2026. This performance puts the fund on a clear trajectory to surpass its annual mobilization target of GH₵9 billion. The current figure represents a remarkable 106% increase compared to the same period in the previous year, highlighting a period of substantial growth for Ghana’s mineral revenue management.
The sharp rise in royalty receipts is primarily attributed to the implementation of a new sliding scale formula. This innovative regime allows royalty rates to adjust dynamically based on prevailing market prices, ensuring that the state captures a fair share of windfall gains during periods of high commodity prices. Beyond the formulaic changes, the fund’s performance has been bolstered by consistently strong international gold prices and enhanced monitoring of mining activities across the country.
Justina Nelson, the Chief Executive Officer of MIIF, noted that the mining sector, specifically large-scale gold operations, remains the backbone of these receipts. She emphasized that the successful shift in the royalty regime reflects a broader commitment to optimizing the value derived from Ghana's natural resources. According to the CEO, the fund remains dedicated to responsible financial management and strategic investments that aim to provide sustainable benefits for all Ghanaians.
Looking ahead, MIIF’s ability to maintain this momentum will be critical for its long-term investment strategy. By securing higher royalty inflows, the fund is better positioned to diversify its portfolio and support various developmental projects. As the 2026 fiscal year enters its final quarter, the focus remains on sustaining these rigorous monitoring standards to ensure that all due royalties are accurately assessed and collected for the national interest.
