The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season is gaining significant momentum following the government’s official confirmation of a new sponsorship package aimed at ensuring the long-term financial viability of participating clubs. Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams announced the initiative, emphasizing that the funding is designed to bolster the independence of Premier League teams and reduce their reliance on direct state interventions. This financial boost comes at a critical time as the league enters its fifth week, with Medeama SC solidifying their position at the summit of the table.
On the pitch, Medeama SC continued their dominant start to the campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Debibi United in their Week 5 encounter. The decisive moment arrived in the second half when Nana Kofi Babil found the back of the net, securing three crucial points for the Tarkwa-based side. This victory keeps Medeama firmly at the top of the league standings and reinforces their status as early title contenders. The result is a testament to the tactical discipline the team has displayed since the season's commencement, which has also earned their technical leadership individual recognition.
The competitive nature of the young season is further reflected in the nominations for the September NASCO Coach of the Month award. Tanko Ibrahim of Medeama SC and Nana Kweku Agyemang of FC Samartex have both been shortlisted after guiding their respective teams through unbeaten runs in the first four matches. Both tacticians recorded identical statistics of two wins and two draws during the opening month. The winner of this prestigious award will receive a 40-inch NASCO television and a double-door bottom-freezer refrigerator, courtesy of Electroland Ghana Limited.
Individual player excellence has also been spotlighted with the announcement of six nominees for the September Player of the Month award. The shortlist features standout performers David Gyamfi Junior (FC AshantiGold 04), Meshack Adjetey Sowah (Samartex), Richard Owusu (Debibi United), Stephen Amankona (Aduana FC), Abdul Jalilu (Heart of Lions), and Zaidan Mohammed (Karela United). The winner will be rewarded with a 43-inch NASCO television and a double-door refrigerator. These accolades, combined with the new government-backed sponsorship, signal a period of renewed investment and professionalization within Ghana's top-flight football league.
