Rev. Martin Apraku Amankwah has been consecrated as the new Coadjutor Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Sunyani, using his inaugural address to call for a return to Christian values. He warned that greed, selfishness, and deep-seated political divisions are currently undermining Ghana's national development. Speaking shortly after the ceremony, the new Bishop emphasized that these societal vices are not only stalling progress but are also contributing to environmental degradation and social discord across the country.
The Bishop urged Ghanaians to look beyond their political identities and find common ground through the teachings of Jesus Christ. He argued that the gospel should be the primary vehicle for fostering unity, encouraging citizens to prioritize the collective good over individual or partisan interests. By focusing on Christ-centered values, Amankwah believes the nation can overcome the animosity that often characterizes political discourse and work toward a more cohesive society.
A significant portion of the Bishop’s address focused on the upbringing of the next generation. He called for a renewed emphasis on moral education for children and urged the Anglican Church to strengthen its engagement with schools. According to Amankwah, nurturing responsible citizens from a young age is essential for long-term national stability and ethical leadership. He noted that the Church has a critical role to play in shaping the character of the youth to ensure they grow into patriotic and selfless adults.
Supporting these sentiments, the Diocesan Bishop, Right Rev. Dr. Festus Yeboah Asuamah, highlighted several pressing social and economic challenges. He called for more lawful practices in the mining sector and the urgent restoration of environments degraded by illegal activities. Furthermore, Bishop Asuamah stressed the need for the government and stakeholders to create more job opportunities for the youth while addressing growing concerns over road safety and drug abuse, which he noted require a collaborative effort from all sectors of society.
