Demolition of structures has commenced along the Bamahu-Wa township road as Maripoma Enterprise Limited begins work on a major road dualization project in the Upper West Region. The initiative is part of the government’s Big Push Infrastructure Programme, aimed at enhancing transportation networks and stimulating economic growth within the Wa municipality. The project, which officially began in January 2026, is scheduled for completion within a 36-month period.
The clearing of the right-of-way has led to the displacement of several small businesses, including pharmacies and tailoring shops, that previously operated along the busy stretch. While many affected business owners expressed their support for the long-term benefits of the infrastructure development, they highlighted the significant challenges of finding suitable new locations on short notice. Many operators are now calling for government intervention to help mitigate the economic impact on their livelihoods as they transition away from the project site.
Regional Highways Director, Mr. Lovestone Damalie, has confirmed the progress of the works and addressed concerns regarding the displacement of local residents and vendors. He assured the public that the government is committed to providing compensation to individuals who are eligible under the project's assessment criteria. As the 36-month timeline unfolds, the dualization is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and improve the safety of commuters entering and exiting the regional capital.
