Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, has issued a strong condemnation of recent drone attacks targeting civilians across Sudan and the Abyei Administrative Area. These aerial strikes have resulted in the tragic deaths of more than 250 people, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing regional conflict. The Chairperson expressed deep concern over the rising civilian toll and the worsening security situation that continues to plague the Sudanese population and surrounding territories.
The attacks were reported across several flashpoint locations, including the capital city of Khartoum, Nyala in South Darfur, and Al-Dibab. In his formal statement, Youssouf highlighted the devastating impact these specific incidents have had on non-combatants and essential infrastructure. He called for an immediate and unconditional halt to all attacks on civilians and civilian property, emphasizing that such actions violate international humanitarian law. The AU also urged all warring parties to ensure unimpeded access for humanitarian aid to reach those in desperate need of medical supplies and food.
Beyond the immediate cessation of violence, the African Union reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sudan. Youssouf underscored that the only path to a sustainable peace is through a negotiated political resolution and a comprehensive humanitarian ceasefire. To this end, the AU Commission remains dedicated to supporting ongoing mediation efforts led by regional and international partners. The organization continues to push for a dialogue-based approach to resolve the underlying grievances driving the conflict and to restore long-term stability to the region.
