President John Dramani Mahama has been conferred with an honorary doctorate by the Patrice Lumumba Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University) in Moscow. The award recognizes his dedication to expanding educational access in Ghana and his efforts to enhance bilateral educational ties between the two nations. The ceremony, led by the university's rector, celebrated Mahama's leadership in the education sector and served as a forum for the President to discuss his administration's ongoing reforms.
During his address, President Mahama highlighted key initiatives aimed at removing financial barriers and ensuring inclusivity within the Ghanaian education system. He specifically cited the School Feeding Programme, the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, and the "No-Fee Stress" policy as critical pillars of his government's strategy. These programmes, he explained, are essential for ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed regardless of their financial background.
The President also reaffirmed his government's commitment to prioritizing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). He emphasized that equipping students with practical skills and industry-relevant knowledge is vital for preparing them for the modern job market. By focusing on vocational training, the administration aims to empower graduates to solve real-world problems and contribute directly to the country's industrialization and economic growth.
In his concluding remarks, Mahama called for a stronger partnership between academic institutions, private industries, and the government to improve the overall quality of education. He expressed deep gratitude to RUDN University for the honor, noting that such recognition reinforces his commitment to educational excellence. He stressed that bridging the gap between academia and industry is necessary to ensure that Ghana’s development is driven by a skilled and innovative workforce.
