President John Dramani Mahama has announced his intention to use the upcoming Russia–Africa Summit as a platform to appeal for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Speaking at the Financial Times Africa Summit in London, the President confirmed that he plans to engage directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Russia. Mahama’s planned intervention comes as part of a broader diplomatic effort to address a war that has resulted in significant global economic disruption and loss of life since the initial invasion in early 2022.
During his address in London, the President reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to its traditional policy of non-alignment. He emphasized that this stance allows the country to maintain friendly and productive relations with all global powers, positioning Ghana as a neutral but active participant in international security discussions. Mahama noted that while individual nations have the sovereign right to seek security assistance—referencing Russia’s military involvement in the Sahel region to combat terrorism—the ultimate goal must be the restoration of peace and stability through international cooperation.
The President highlighted the urgency of finding a diplomatic resolution to the Ukraine crisis, noting that ongoing military actions continue to cause immense destruction. By taking this message to the Russia–Africa Summit, Mahama aims to contribute to a collective African voice urging for an end to hostilities. This move underscores the administration’s strategy of proactive diplomacy, seeking to leverage Ghana’s international standing to influence peace processes that affect global markets and security.
