President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major expansion of Ghana’s emergency healthcare fleet, pledging to procure 100 new ambulances and repair 100 existing vehicles for the National Ambulance Service. Speaking at the Ghana Medical Association's (GMA) 68th Annual General Conference on November 6, 2026, the President outlined the initiative as a critical step toward improving emergency medical response times and patient transport capabilities across the country.
The dual strategy of purchasing new vehicles while restoring broken-down units is intended to rapidly increase the operational capacity of the emergency service. President Mahama emphasized that these measures are essential for addressing current bottlenecks in emergency care. He noted that the fleet expansion would be integrated with broader efforts to increase emergency bed capacity and refine the national patient referral system, ensuring that critically ill patients are moved efficiently to facilities equipped to handle their specific needs.
Beyond the ambulance service, the President detailed several infrastructure projects aimed at modernizing the broader health sector. These include conducting feasibility studies for sewage systems in public health facilities and advancing specialized medical care through projects such as the cardiac catheterisation laboratory at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. He also highlighted the ongoing construction of various maternity hospitals and the development of a national transplantation framework to regulate and support complex medical procedures within Ghana.
This comprehensive approach is designed to build a more resilient healthcare system and reduce the reliance on foreign medical treatment. By investing in both emergency hardware and long-term policy frameworks, the administration aims to ensure that healthcare delivery is sustained and accessible to all citizens, regardless of their location. The President reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining these investments to support the work of medical professionals and improve overall health outcomes for the nation.
