The National Vaccine Institute (NVI) has established a next-generation mRNA technology laboratory at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), making Ghana one of only five African countries to possess such advanced capabilities. This development is a cornerstone of the country's strategy to achieve self-sufficiency in vaccine production and reduce its heavy reliance on imported medicines and biological products. President John Mahama is expected to officially open the facility, which signals a significant shift in Ghana’s public health infrastructure.
The establishment of the lab is supported by a $50 million funding allocation and aligns with a newly launched Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Policy. Dr. Sodzi Sodzi-Tettey, CEO of the NVI, noted that this policy framework is designed to address long-standing financing challenges and provide necessary support for local manufacturers. The government’s backing includes provisions for producing raw materials locally, facilitating contract manufacturing, and providing investment financing to ensure the industry’s long-term sustainability.
According to Dr. Sodzi-Tettey, the Ghanaian pharmaceutical industry is entering a "golden era" as it transitions from being a net importer to a regional manufacturing hub. Beyond mRNA technology, the institute is focused on producing several essential vaccines and biological products. A key early milestone in this expanded capability is the local manufacturing of Snake Venom Anti-Serum, which represents a critical step in addressing regional medical needs through domestic production.
This move to localize vaccine development is intended to safeguard Ghana’s health security against future pandemics while fostering a robust industrial ecosystem. By positioning itself as a leader in next-generation medical technology, Ghana aims to set a benchmark for the West African sub-region. The NVI continues to work with various stakeholders to ensure that the mRNA laboratory serves as a catalyst for innovation and research excellence at the University of Ghana’s Noguchi Institute.
