President John Dramani Mahama visited the "Woven Meanings" exhibition at the All-Russian Museum of Decorative Arts in Moscow, an event held alongside the Third Russia-Africa Summit. The exhibition, which showcases the rich heritage of Ghanaian kente textiles, was organized through a collaboration between the Russia-Ghana Parliamentary Forum, the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), and Ghana’s Ministry of Trade. The visit highlights the administration's focus on cultural diplomacy as a key pillar of international relations.
The exhibition has proved a significant draw in the Russian capital, attracting more than 11,000 visitors in less than two weeks. To foster a deeper connection with the local audience, the displays include detailed explanations in the Russian language regarding the history and symbolism of the kente designs. Part of the International Festival of African Culture and Cinema, the initiative positions kente cloth as a primary symbol of Ghanaian identity and a tool for building genuine understanding between the two nations.
During his tour of the museum, President Mahama emphasized that while formal diplomatic and economic agreements are necessary, the most sustainable ties are built through people-to-people connections. He noted that cultural appreciation allows for a more profound relationship that transcends official policy. The President argued that cultural diplomacy should be pursued with the same vigor as trade or energy cooperation, as it creates the social foundation for successful bilateral partnerships.
The visit to the cultural exhibition is part of a broader diplomatic mission to Russia, where the President is also participating in high-level discussions on trade, energy, and global security. During his time in Moscow, he has received honorary doctorates from two Russian universities and reaffirmed Ghana's commitment to a non-aligned foreign policy. By promoting Ghanaian heritage on the global stage, the President aims to strengthen the nation's visibility and foster new avenues for mutual development across various sectors.
