President John Dramani Mahama has expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, specifically highlighting Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, following Ghana’s successful bid for re-election to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). Ghana secured its seat for the 2027–2029 term with a strong showing in the international ballot, garnering 173 out of 181 valid votes. This performance placed Ghana second globally in the election, sharing that rank with Kuwait and Nepal.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony for new ambassadors at the Jubilee House on October 16, 2026, the President noted that the international community's support reflects confidence in Ghana’s democratic credentials. He emphasized that this re-election brings a renewed responsibility for the nation to lead and contribute effectively to global human rights discourse. Mahama's praise for the diplomatic team underscores the government's focus on re-establishing Ghana's influence within multilateral institutions.
The President specifically addressed Jedidiah Reuben Adogla, the newly appointed Permanent Representative to Geneva, urging him to ensure that Ghana’s interests are well-articulated on the world stage. He stressed the importance of advocating for the country's stances on critical issues including trade, health, and human rights. Mahama called for a proactive approach, advising the diplomat to maintain consistent engagement with international partners to secure broad support for Ghana’s policy positions.
Central to these diplomatic efforts is the "Accra Reset" agenda, which the President highlighted as a priority for his administration. This initiative aims to reform global health governance and ensure more equitable access to health products across the African continent. By leveraging its position on the UNHRC, the government intends to coordinate closely between its representatives in Geneva and the leadership in Accra to advance these reforms and advocate for the continent's interests in global decision-making forums.
