President John Dramani Mahama has invited Russian investors and businesses to form strategic partnerships with Ghanaian counterparts to bolster trade and industrial growth. Speaking at the Russia-Africa Forum in Moscow, the President highlighted opportunities across eight strategic sectors, including energy, agro-processing, and pharmaceuticals. He emphasized the importance of joint ventures that leverage local expertise to ensure sustainable economic development for both nations.
During his address, the President identified fertilizer production and agro-processing as priority areas to enhance food security. To facilitate smoother commercial exchanges, he proposed the adoption of innovative trade settlement mechanisms, such as the use of local currencies. This approach aims to reduce reliance on external financial systems and improve market access, further strengthening the economic ties between Ghana and Russia.
President Mahama also called for enhanced Africa-Russia cooperation to address the continent’s significant infrastructure deficit. He noted that inadequate transport networks remain a primary barrier to intra-African trade and the full realization of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). By investing in transport infrastructure, he argued that partners could help unlock the vast potential of the unified African market, with Ghana serving as a strategic gateway.
Highlighting Ghana’s recent economic performance, the President pointed to positive indicators, including steady GDP growth and an increase in foreign investment. He encouraged the Russian business community to take advantage of Ghana’s stable investment climate and its commitment to industrialization. The discussions in Moscow focused on aligning Russian investment with Africa’s broader transport and economic development needs for long-term mutual benefit.
