President John Dramani Mahama has officially inaugurated the 85-bed Christian Tetteh Yohuno Ward Complex at the Ghana Police Hospital in Accra. During the ceremony, the President asserted that the country is significantly safer today than in previous years, crediting the improved security environment to the strategic efforts of the Ghana Police Service. He noted a marked decline in unresolved murder cases and shared anecdotal evidence of improved safety for citizens, citing a testimony from a bus driver who felt safe enough to traverse the country's roads during the night.
The newly commissioned ward complex is part of a broader government effort to enhance the healthcare delivery system for security personnel and their families. President Mahama praised the police leadership for their dedication to duty and for ensuring that the service remains a cornerstone of national stability. He emphasized that the peace and security currently enjoyed in Ghana are tangible results of targeted investments in the security apparatus, which have boosted officer morale and operational efficiency.
To sustain these improvements, the President outlined a significant financial commitment to police welfare and infrastructure. He announced plans for GH‵500 million in funding, which includes GH‵300 million for the construction of new police apartments and GH‵200 million dedicated to further expanding the Police Hospital's facilities. These investments are intended to address the housing deficit within the service and ensure that officers have access to modern medical care in a conducive environment.
Beyond physical infrastructure, President Mahama emphasized the critical need for mental health support for officers who often operate under high-stress conditions. He urged the management of the Ghana Police Hospital to prioritize mental health services and maintain the highest standards of hygiene and maintenance for the new ward complex. The President concluded by reiterating that a well-equipped and healthy police force is essential for the continued safety and prosperity of the Ghanaian people.
