President John Mahama Unveils 5-Year Strategic Plan to Slash Pharmaceutical Imports and Boost Local Manufacturing

President John Mahama has announced an ambitious five-year strategic roadmap aimed at transforming Ghana’s pharmaceutical industry and achieving national self-sufficiency in medicine production. Speaking at a Free Primary Healthcare durbar in the Upper East Region as part of his Reset Agenda Tour, the President highlighted the urgent need to address the country’s heavy dependence on foreign drugs. Currently, approximately 70 percent of all medicines consumed in Ghana are imported, a situation the new plan seeks to drastically reverse by prioritizing local manufacturing and industrial growth.

The five-year initiative is designed to do more than just meet domestic demand; it aims to position Ghana as a premier pharmaceutical export hub for the West African sub-region. To achieve this, the government will collaborate closely with key stakeholders, including the National Vaccine Institute and the Pharmaceutical Association of Ghana. By scaling up local production capacity, the administration expects to significantly lower the cost of essential drugs, making healthcare more affordable for the average Ghanaian while simultaneously creating jobs within the high-tech manufacturing sector.

This pharmaceutical drive is a core component of President Mahama's broader healthcare strategy, which includes significant reinvestment in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and the expansion of primary healthcare services. The President emphasized that a robust local drug industry is essential for the success of his Free Primary Healthcare policy. Beyond manufacturing, the government is also directing resources toward the distribution of modern medical equipment to underserved areas and providing enhanced support for the treatment of chronic illnesses, ensuring that no citizen is left behind regardless of their geographical location.

Ultimately, the President framed these healthcare reforms as a critical investment in Ghana’s human capital and economic future. He underscored the fundamental link between public health security and national prosperity, noting that a healthy population is the foundation of wealth. By reducing the capital flight associated with drug imports and securing the supply chain for essential medicines, the five-year plan represents a strategic shift toward a more resilient and sovereign Ghanaian healthcare system.
