President John Dramani Mahama has officially commissioned a new production line at the Nestlé Ghana Limited factory in Tema, marking a significant milestone in the relationship between the multinational brand and the Ghanaian public. The expansion is designed to enhance the company's manufacturing capacity and meet the growing demand for consumer goods in the country. During the ceremony, the President emphasized that the enduring presence of such industries is a testament to the country's conducive business environment and the loyalty of local consumers.
The commissioning comes on the back of recent market research indicating a robust growth in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector. Household spending on FMCG products in Ghana rose by 12.9% in 2025, reflecting increased economic activity. However, the data also presents a challenge for manufacturers; while 69% of leading brands saw growth in consumer spending, only 52% managed to increase their household reach. President Mahama noted that for brands to remain sustainable, they must bridge this gap by attracting new buyers while maintaining the trust of their existing customer base.
Highlighting the importance of brand familiarity and relevance, President Mahama pointed out that successful companies are those that integrate themselves into the daily lives and traditions of Ghanaian families. He encouraged other businesses to emulate the Nestlé model of combining global standards with local relevance. The President further observed that as competition in the FMCG market intensifies, the ability of brands to reach more households will be the primary driver of long-term industrial success.
This new investment at the Tema factory is expected to create additional jobs and strengthen the local supply chain by increasing the demand for raw materials and services. It aligns with the government’s industrialization agenda, which seeks to transform Ghana into a leading manufacturing hub in West Africa. By boosting local production capacity, the government aims to reduce reliance on imports and ensure that high-quality products are readily available to all Ghanaians at competitive prices.
