The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), popularly known as Mahama Cares, is expanding its regional sensitisation tour to the Northern and Upper East regions. This extension follows a series of successful engagements in the Western, Central, Greater Accra, and Volta regions. The primary objective of this phase is to enhance public awareness of the fund’s mission, which prioritises the early detection of chronic diseases and the provision of financial support for specialized healthcare services.
Led by the fund’s administrator, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, the upcoming tour will involve direct engagements with regional authorities, traditional leaders, health professionals, and civil society organisations. These sessions are designed to educate residents on the fund’s specific interventions and the eligibility criteria for patient support. A central theme of the campaign is the critical importance of early diagnosis and treatment for life-threatening conditions such as cancer, as the fund seeks to uphold its principle that no family should be crushed by the financial weight of chronic illness.
In addition to public education, the tour provides a platform for stakeholders to address persistent gaps in healthcare delivery. Discussions will focus on identifying equipment shortages and removing the financial barriers that often prevent patients from seeking timely care. Mrs. Darko-Opoku is expected to stress the need for collaborative efforts between the government, health institutions, and local communities to ensure that essential medical care is accessible to all Ghanaians, regardless of their location or economic status.
This expansion into the northern part of the country reflects the GMTF’s commitment to achieving nationwide equity in healthcare access. By building on the momentum of its previous regional visits, the fund aims to strengthen its support network and ensure that vulnerable populations are aware of the resources available to them. The tour marks a significant step in the administration's broader effort to alleviate the burden of specialized medical costs for families across the country.
