The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has officially handed over four dispatch motorcycles to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to bolster the Ayalolo Rapid Bus Transit (BRT) system. This intervention is specifically designed to enhance the efficiency of contraflow operations in the Greater Accra Region, ensuring that buses can bypass heavy traffic during the upcoming Christmas festivities. By providing these additional resources, the government aims to significantly reduce travel times for thousands of commuters who rely on the bus service during the busy holiday season.
Speaking at the presentation, Mr. Ayariga explained that the acquisition of the Honda motorcycles addresses a critical logistical gap—the shortage of dedicated dispatch riders to guide buses through specialized lanes. This shortage has been particularly felt on the Amasaman stretch, where traffic congestion frequently delays public transport. The Minister noted that the procurement follows a directive from President John Mahama to strengthen urban transport operations. In addition to the motorcycles, marked pickup vehicles are being deployed to support the MTTD team. Motorists have been urged to exercise extra caution during peak Ayalolo operational hours, which run from 6:00 am to 9:00 am and 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Beyond the immediate logistical support, the Minister highlighted a collaborative effort involving multiple ministries to maintain the bus transit system. He also called on Municipal Chief Executives to take decisive action by clearing unauthorized traders from public transport corridors to prevent bottlenecks. While the Ayalolo system remains the current priority for urban mass transit, the government is also considering long-term alternatives, including potential light rail solutions for Ghana's major cities. The MTTD’s Commanding Officer assured the public that the new motorcycles would be deployed immediately to facilitate a smoother travel experience.
