Minister Mahama Ayariga has led a high-level government delegation to the Kumasi Central Market to assess the extent of damage following a fire that razed several shops. Acting on the instruction of President John Mahama, the Minister toured the affected areas on October 9, 2026, to engage with victims and evaluate the impact on the local economy. The fire, which broke out under circumstances still being reviewed, destroyed approximately 15 shops before it was contained by the swift response of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
During the visit, Mr. Ayariga assured the affected traders of the government’s commitment to providing relief and support. He indicated that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has been tasked with conducting a thorough audit of the losses to ensure that assistance reaches those most in need. The Minister emphasized that the government recognizes the vital role of the Kumasi Central Market in the nation’s trade and is dedicated to helping the traders recover from the setback as quickly as possible.
Beyond immediate relief, Mr. Ayariga pointed to the Kejetia Market redevelopment project as the primary long-term strategy for preventing such occurrences. He explained that the subsequent phases of the project aim to modernize market infrastructure and significantly reduce the congestion that currently plagues the central market area. By relocating traders to more structured environments, the government hopes to minimize fire risks and improve access for emergency services. He concluded by urging traders to observe safety regulations and maintain vigilance to protect their investments and lives.
