Sports journalists Listowel Mensah and Evans Kwabena Sarpong, together with youth activist Albert Owusu Buadu, have officially petitioned the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to launch an investigation into the Ghana Football Association (GFA). The petition centers on the management of a US$2.7 million allocation provided by the Government of Ghana for the construction of a 40-bed hotel facility at the Ghanaman Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
The group’s decision to involve EOCO stems from concerns over financial transparency and the utilization of public funds designated for the national team’s infrastructure. The proposed hotel is intended to provide accommodation for the Black Stars and other national teams during their training and camping periods at the Prampram facility. By seeking an official inquiry, the petitioners aim to ensure that the US$2.7 million earmarked for the project is fully accounted for and used strictly for its intended purpose.
This move comes at a time when the administration of the Ghana Football Association is under increased public scrutiny regarding its financial dealings and the execution of state-funded projects. The Ghanaman Centre of Excellence has long been a focal point for football development in the country, and the addition of a modern 40-bed hotel was presented as a significant step toward improving national team logistics. The petitioners believe that a formal probe by EOCO is necessary to clarify the status of the funds and the progress of the construction.
The Economic and Organised Crime Office is expected to review the petition to determine whether there is sufficient cause to open a full-scale investigation into the GFA’s handling of the hotel project. If the investigation proceeds, it could provide much-needed clarity on the financial relationship between the government and the football governing body regarding infrastructure development. The outcome of this petition remains a point of interest for sports stakeholders and the general public concerned with accountability in Ghanaian football.
