Linford Atakora, a 29-year-old Ghanaian national, has been sentenced to nine months in a United States federal prison for fraudulently using a relative's Social Security number to obtain employment. US District Court Judge Daniel L. Hovland delivered the sentence in North Dakota after Atakora was found guilty of misrepresenting his identity to bypass immigration and work authorization requirements.
According to court records and statements from the US Attorney’s Office for the District of North Dakota, Atakora used the name and Social Security number of a US citizen relative to secure a position at Love and Care, Inc., a healthcare agency based in Bismarck. During the hiring process, he provided falsified documents and completed employment forms using the stolen identity. This deception had significant financial consequences, resulting in the agency receiving over $51,000 in ineligible health claims from the US Department of Health and Human Services.
US Attorney Nicholas W. Chase highlighted the case as a warning against the misuse of identification documents, noting that such actions undermine federal immigration laws. The sentence imposed by the court accounts for the time Atakora has already spent in federal custody. Following the completion of his prison term, the court has ordered his immediate removal from the United States and deportation back to Ghana.
