The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has announced that her ministry will collaborate with National Security to safeguard victims of alleged sexual assault at the Obuasi Senior High Technical School. During a visit to the institution, the Minister addressed growing concerns regarding the safety and anonymity of the survivors, whose identities have reportedly been circulated on public social media platforms. Dr. Lartey’s intervention follows reports of escalating threats and intimidation directed at the young victims in the wake of the allegations.
During her engagement with the students, Dr. Lartey listened to distressing personal accounts from the victims, who expressed significant fear for their personal security. The Minister condemned the public disclosure of their identities, noting that such exposure not only violates their privacy but also subjects them to further psychological trauma and harassment. She emphasized that the state has a responsibility to provide a secure environment for survivors of sexual violence to ensure they can seek justice without fear of retaliation or social stigmatization.
To address these security breaches, the Gender Minister pledged to work closely with National Security agencies to track down and identify individuals responsible for the threats and the leak of sensitive information. Furthermore, she stated that efforts would be made to remove any online content that compromises the anonymity of the survivors. This move is part of a broader government commitment under the Mahama administration to upholding the dignity of vulnerable citizens and ensuring that the legal process regarding the alleged assaults proceeds without outside interference or intimidation of witnesses.
