Lakehead University’s Faculty of Natural Resources Management has been awarded a CAD $570,000 grant to support 35 Ghanaians through specialized education and professional training. This initiative, titled "Best practices in sustainable natural resources management," is funded under the Canadian International Development Scholarships 2030 (BCDI 2030) program. The project aims to bolster Ghana's capacity to manage its natural resources effectively, providing critical skills to students, researchers, and industry professionals at a time when the country faces significant environmental pressures.
The scholarship program is designed to provide diverse educational pathways, including full master’s degree scholarships for three students and intensive month-long training sessions for nine professionals. Participants will delve into technical and scientific fields such as wood science, remote sensing, and ecological studies. By focusing on these specific disciplines, the program intends to equip Ghanaian experts with modern tools and knowledge to foster sustainable industrial practices and environmental stewardship.
A central objective of this collaboration is to address the pressing environmental challenges currently impacting Ghana, most notably the issue of illegal mining, locally known as galamsey. The training and research conducted under this grant are expected to produce actionable insights and best practices that can be implemented locally to mitigate the destruction of forest reserves and water bodies. Through this academic and professional exchange, the project seeks to build a resilient workforce capable of protecting Ghana's natural heritage for future generations.
