SPMDP President Warns of Alarming Cancer Trends in Ghana as New Pediatric Unit and Patient Care Studies Highlight Systemic Gaps

Ghana is facing a "dreadful" trend in oncology, with approximately 28,000 new cancer cases and 18,000 deaths recorded annually. Dr. Andre Kwasi-Kumah, President of the Society of Private Medical and Dental Practitioners (SPMDP), issued this warning during the organization’s 45th Annual General Meeting, emphasizing that while cancer is prevalent globally, Ghana suffers from disproportionately high morbidity and mortality rates due to late medical intervention. Despite ongoing efforts to reduce treatment costs, experts argue that low public awareness and inadequate infrastructure continue to hinder effective care across the country.

Beyond awareness, new research published in JCO Global Oncology highlights critical failures in the patient journey. A study led by Nana Akosua Ofosuah Frimpong revealed that among women diagnosed with malignant breast cancer, only 64% actually initiated treatment. The research identified a significant median delay of 76 days between diagnosis and the start of therapy. These gaps are often driven by non-clinical barriers, including high transportation costs, financial constraints, and a lack of effective patient navigation systems to guide individuals through the complex healthcare hierarchy from diagnosis to recovery.

To combat these challenges, Dr. Kwasi-Kumah has called for a strategic shift in how Ghana handles medical technology and private healthcare funding. He urged the government to implement tax waivers on essential medical equipment and provide better financial support for private health facilities. Such measures are viewed as vital for upgrading treatment technology nationwide, ensuring that modern interventions are not only available but also affordable. He emphasized that a coordinated effort from all stakeholders is the only way to effectively reduce the morbidity associated with the disease.

Amidst these systemic hurdles, targeted efforts to improve the clinical experience for the most vulnerable are moving forward. The Department of Child Health at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) recently received a GH₵100,000 donation from KPMG Alumni to help establish a digital pain-free Venipuncture Suite. This GH₵200,000 project aims to use digital distraction technologies and specialized tools to alleviate the trauma children face during frequent medical procedures. Dr. Lily Gloria Tagoe, a pediatric oncologist, noted that such innovations are crucial for maintaining the emotional well-being of young patients undergoing rigorous oncology regimens.

The converging reports underscore that improving cancer outcomes in Ghana requires more than isolated interventions; it demands a unified national strategy. From enhancing the patient navigation experience to investing in pediatric-specific infrastructure and private sector technology, stakeholders are calling for a holistic approach. As the country navigates these healthcare challenges under the administration of President John Mahama, the focus remains on bridging the gap between diagnosis and survival through aggressive policy reform and community-driven support.
