The Adenta Circuit Court has sentenced Kwame Agyapong, an unemployed man, to 10 years in prison for his role in a violent attempt to rob a mobile money vendor. Agyapong was convicted of attempted robbery and causing harm following a trial in which the prosecution successfully demonstrated his culpability. The court handed down a 10-year term for the attempted robbery and a concurrent two-year sentence for causing harm, meaning he will serve a total of 10 years in hard labour.
The incident occurred on June 5, 2025, when Agyapong targeted Christian Owusu, a mobile money agent operating in the Adenta area. Armed with a machete, Agyapong attacked Owusu in a desperate attempt to seize GH₵40,000. However, the robbery attempt did not go as planned. Despite the sudden and violent nature of the assault, Owusu managed to resist his attacker. During a physical struggle, the vendor successfully wrested the machete from Agyapong’s hands, forcing the assailant to flee the scene empty-handed.
Following the botched robbery, Agyapong was eventually apprehended by the police. During the court proceedings, Agyapong pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him. However, the prosecution presented compelling evidence, including witness testimony that corroborated Owusu's account of the attack. The presiding judge noted the gravity of the offense before delivering the final judgment, emphasizing the need to deter similar attacks against mobile money operators who frequently face high risks in their line of work.
