Parliament's Select Committee on Sports has commenced a series of public hearings investigating the financial management of the 13th African Games hosted by Ghana. At the center of the inquiry is Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, the former Executive Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), who faced intense questioning regarding specific expenditures totaling approximately GH¢1.107 million allocated for media-related activities. The session, which was livestreamed to the public, underscored the committee's commitment to transparency following the conclusion of the continental sporting event earlier this year. During the proceedings, tension escalated when committee members sought clarification on the specific breakdown of funds used for media engagement, activities, and resources. Dr. Ofosu-Asare reportedly clashed with the Members of Parliament, at one point stating, 'I can’t answer for them,' when pressed to justify the distinctions between overlapping media-related expenditure lines in the financial report. This refusal to provide detailed explanations prompted concerns from the committee regarding the level of accountability within the LOC’s financial reporting structures. The Parliamentary Select Committee’s review extends beyond the media budget to include a comprehensive audit of the total funds allocated for preparations, logistics, infrastructure, and related activities. As the inquiry continues, the focus remains on ensuring that the public resources committed during the previous administration are fully accounted for. These hearings represent a critical step in assessing the legacy of the African Games and establishing more rigorous financial protocols for future sports hosting duties under the current administration of President John Mahama.
