The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced that the Cabinet has officially approved the appointment of a dedicated facility manager for the Borteyman Sports Complex. This strategic move is intended to ensure the long-term sustainability and professional maintenance of the world-class infrastructure, which was originally commissioned in 2024 by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to host the 13th African Games. Built at a significant cost of $145.1 million, the complex serves as a cornerstone of Ghana’s modern sports architecture but has recently faced scrutiny regarding its long-term upkeep and operational future.
The Borteyman facility boasts state-of-the-art amenities, including a 1,000-capacity swimming aquatic center and a versatile multipurpose sports hall designed for various indoor disciplines. Despite its high-end features, Minister Adams noted that the transition from a tournament venue to a permanent national asset has revealed that the original development plans were not properly executed. By appointing a professional manager, the government aims to rectify these historical oversights and prevent the complex from suffering the same deterioration seen at other major national venues where maintenance has been inconsistent.
Central to the new manager's mandate will be the mobilization of resources through public-private partnerships (PPP). This approach is designed to secure the necessary funding to complete unfinished infrastructure within the complex and enhance its overall commercial viability. Minister Adams emphasized that this partnership model is essential to relieve the state of the total financial burden of maintenance while ensuring the facility remains a premier destination for both local athletes and international competitions. This decision marks a critical step in the government's broader strategy to professionalize sports administration and safeguard the nation’s multi-million dollar investments.
