The 2026 KGL Foundation Millennium Marathon drew thousands of athletes and fitness enthusiasts to Independence Square in Accra, cementing its status as Ghana's premier international road race. This year's edition was characterized by a powerful showing from East African elite runners and a renewed corporate commitment to addressing mental health challenges across the country. As participants from across the globe converged in the capital, the event successfully blended high-stakes competitive athletics with a significant social mission focused on holistic wellness.
Kenyan athletes once again demonstrated their world-class long-distance prowess, dominating the elite 21km races. Alex Korio secured the top spot in the men’s category, while Lucy Ndambuki claimed victory in the women’s race. Ndambuki’s performance was the highlight of the day's sporting achievements, as she set a new course record, underscoring the increasing competitiveness and prestige of the annual event on the international circuit. The race provided a platform for both professional marathoners and amateur joggers to test their endurance alongside some of the world's finest distance runners.
Beyond the finish line, the marathon served as a critical vehicle for the KGL Foundation’s Mental Health initiative. Central to this effort is the Mental Health Index (MHI), a strategic tool designed to educate the Ghanaian public and provide data-driven insights into mental well-being. The Foundation utilized the massive turnout to promote the KGL-EVE Wellness Centre and highlight its ongoing investments in community welfare, which include the construction of specialized mental health facilities to support vulnerable populations and reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues.
KGL Foundation CEO Elliot Dadey expressed immense pride in the marathon’s success, noting that the event reflects the organization’s five-year journey of impactful social intervention. Dadey emphasized that while the race promotes physical fitness, its true value lies in fostering community development and supporting youth sports through sustained investment. As the KGL Foundation continues to expand its philanthropic footprint, the Millennium Marathon remains a cornerstone of its efforts to integrate health advocacy and sports into the fabric of Ghanaian social life.
