Justina Nelson, the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), has called for enhanced data sharing and regional cooperation among African nations to unlock the full potential of the continent’s mineral wealth. Speaking at the African Minerals Policy Forum, held during the Mining in Motion conference, Nelson underscored that these collaborative efforts are essential for African countries to transition from being mere exporters of raw materials to significant players in the global industrial value chain.
The MIIF CEO emphasized that strategic investment and the harmonization of government policies are critical drivers for boosting local job creation and industrial growth. She argued that for African nations to derive sustainable value from their resources, there must be a concerted effort to share geological and market data. This transparency and cooperation would allow for better-informed decision-making and more competitive positioning in the global market, aligning with the broader objectives of the African Mining Vision for inclusive growth.
Beyond data sharing, the forum identified several structural requirements for the development of domestic mineral processing industries. Nelson pointed out that access to affordable energy and reliable financing remains a significant hurdle for many African states. Overcoming these challenges is vital for establishing value-addition facilities on the continent, which would ensure that a larger share of the economic benefits from mining remains within local economies rather than being exported alongside raw ores.
In her concluding observations, Nelson stressed that effective policy implementation is the key to ensuring that mineral resources lead to sustainable development. She noted that while many countries have robust frameworks on paper, the practical application of these policies is what will ultimately determine the success of Africa’s industrialization efforts. By focusing on sustainable practices and regional integration, the MIIF head believes African nations can secure a more prosperous future through their vast natural endowments.
