Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has called on African leaders to reconsider the role of the diaspora in continental development, urging a shift from viewing them solely as sources of remittances to vital partners in economic growth. Speaking at the launch of the Elevate Africa Trade Desk, Mr. Debrah emphasized that the diaspora possesses the unique potential to establish robust businesses and trade channels that can significantly bolster inter-African economic activities. He noted that the expertise and networks held by Africans living abroad are essential assets for the continent’s long-term prosperity.
The event, organized by Elevate Africa, served as a significant platform to advocate for a more integrated and self-reliant approach to continental growth. During the launch, Co-Founder Ogiame Atuwatse III addressed the younger generation, challenging them to harness their creative talents and innovative ideas to drive the continent forward. This sentiment was echoed by former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who encouraged African youth to develop clear, transformative visions. President Jonathan stressed that leadership and foresight are critical components in achieving sustainable development across the various regions of Africa.
The newly launched Trade Desk is specifically designed to serve as a strategic bridge, facilitating smoother trade relations within the continent and attracting high-value investments from across the globe. By focusing on indigenous entrepreneurship and diaspora-led initiatives, the program seeks to create a more resilient economic framework that minimizes Africa's historical dependence on foreign aid. Participants at the event expressed a collective optimism that these efforts would pave the way for a more economically integrated continent, leveraging both the financial capital and professional skills of Africans worldwide.
